Hi everyone and welcome to the first “Movies to See” article. Each week, I will post recommendations of what movies you should go see in theaters this weekend and which movies you should watch at home.
Definitely Go See:
Hunt for the Wilderpeople:
Hunt for the Wilderpeople is Taika Waititi’s followup to last year’s What We Do in the Shadows and early reviews look like this movie is just as good as Waititi’s vampire comedy mockumentary. Wilderpeople tells the story of a young boy in the foster care system who runs away with his uncle when society threatens to send him to a new foster home. That may not seem like a comedy premise, but the movie is hilarious and touching.
The Shallows:
I have been excited about this movie since the first preview, but I never thought it would actually be good. Yet, reviews for The Shallows so far have been great. It’s been a long time since there was a big shark movie (that didn’t involve tornadoes) and the concept of someone being trapped in the ocean with a shark at a beach that no one else knows exists is a great idea. It isn’t Jaws, but it seems like The Shallows is a thrilling, fun time at the movies.

Swiss Army Man:
Swiss Army Man was one of the most polarizing films of the Sundance Film Festival this year. Some moviegoers left the movie in the middle of the screening and some critics loved the film. One thing that everyone agreed upon is that this movie is odd. However if the idea of a quirky movie starring Daniel Radcliffe as a reanimated dead body with superhuman abilities seems interesting to you, you should check out this film.
The Neon Demon
The Neon Demon is getting middling reviews so far, but fans of Neon Demon director Nicholas Winding Refn (Drive) may still want to see the movie because it is supposed to be vividly beautiful to look at and it has Refn’s signature style of violence.
Skip These Ones:
Independence Day: Resurgence:
Was anyone really asking for a new Independence Day movie? Maybe if the movie had Will Smith it would have a better shot, but Smith knew better than to sign up for this potential piece of garbage. Reviews for the movie have been middling so far and you should probably avoid it unless you are an absolutely huge fan of the first movie. And even if you love the first Independence Day movie you may want to skip this one so it does not tarnish your feelings for the original.
Free State of Jones
I had high hopes for Free State of Jones. Gary Ross (Big, The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit) has directed some great movies and I am a big fan of the McConaissance, but the reviews are in and it looks like the movie is a big flop.
What to See on DVD and Digital:
Midnight Special:
In a world where every movie is a sequel or adapted from a book, Midnight Special is a breath of fresh air. This science fiction original story by Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) is a beautiful story reminiscent of a Spielberg in his prime and features a great ensemble cast of Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton, and Adam Driver.
